Chevron launches alternative livelihood programme in Sylhet

Chevron Bangladesh formally launched its alternative livelihood programme (ALP) in Sylhet on Thursday. The programme was launched at a city community centre aiming at capacity-building and development of income-generating skills of 1,200 families residing near the company's Jalalabad gas field, says a press release. Friends in Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB), an NGO, will implement the project, in collaboration with Chevron. Lawmaker Hafiz Ahmed Mazumdar inaugurated the project as the chief guest while Policy, Government and Public Affairs General Manager of Chevron's Asia-South Business Unit William A Koetzle was present as special guest. Sylhet Sadar Upazila Chairman Ashfaq Ahmed, Managing Director of Pubali Bank Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, FIVDB Executive Director Zahin Ahmed, Chevron's Lead Advisor Community Engagement Naser Ahmed, External Affairs Manager Obaidullah al Ejaz and Jalalabad Gas Plant Superintend Wanwit Wongpradu were also present. Praising the initiative lawmaker Mazumdar said, “This project will undoubtedly do much for development of the area.” He urged other organisations to take similar steps for economic empowerment of the financially disadvantaged. William A Koetzle assured all-out support to Chevron Bangladesh for smooth and successful implementation of this project. Speaking about success of Chevron's ALP initiatives in Bibiyana and Moulavibazar, Zahin Ahmed said the beneficiaries of project in Bibiyana and Moulavibazar areas were now well on the road to economic self-sufficiency and have reached positions where they are capable in running their own businesses independently. Naser Ahmed in the welcome speech said Chevron has been relentlessly working to develop energy sector in Bangladesh in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner for its present and future generations.
