8 hurt as BCL factions clash at Bakerganj
Eight activists were injured as rival factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League engaged in a clash on Bakerganj Government College campus in Bakerganj town in Barisal district yesterday.
Following an incident over playing carom board at the student's common room in the college on Sunday afternoon, the two groups engaged in an altercation yesterday morning.
Rivals attacked each other with lethal weapons, and engaged in chasing, counter chasing and stone throwing in and around the campus, leaving at least eight people injured.
Conditions of Mehdi Hasan, Mizanur Rahman, Swapan, Gouptam, Jewel, and Tapash were stated to be serious.
The injured received treatment at local health complex and clinics.
M Saifur Rahman, officer in charge of Bakerganj police station, said they intensified patrol in the area.
"The college authority has given an ultimatum to all students for maintaining discipline on the campus. A meeting with them would be held tomorrow [Tuesday]," said college Principal Prof Md Ibrahim.
There is a long-standing rivalry between two factions of BCL activists led by municipality unit BCL joint convener Saiful Huda Dakua and Bakerganj College BCL convener AHM Shahan, sources said.
Former upazila chairman Awami League (AL) leader Mabubul Alam supports the first faction while local AL woman lawmaker Parvin Begum and upazila Chairman Shamsul Alam Chunnu support the other faction.
