Six arrested Kushtia BCL men sent to jail

Six activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Kushtia district and Kushtia Government College units were sent to jail yesterday. They were arrested during a clash between two BCL factions on Kushtia Government College campus on Saturday. Police produced the BCL men in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court that sent them to jail. Two factions--one led by BCL Kushtia district unit General Secretary Saifur Rahman Sumon and the other by Vice-President Mir Saiful Islam--clashed over establishment supremacy on the college campus. On information, police rushed to the spot, charged batons and dispersed the clashing groups. The law enforcers recovered two swords, four cocktails and iron and bamboo sticks from the campus and also arrested the BCL men. The arrestees include Kushtia district unit BCL Vice-President Mir Saiful Islam, activists Lal, Sadhan, Rakib, Lenin and Nayan. Police said Mir Saiful Islam, Lenin and Sadhan were shown arrested in an extortion case while the rest for creating chaos on Kushtia Government College campus. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Sadar Police Station Asaduzzaman told this correspondent that a BCL group led by Saiful went to the then Kushtia Government College principal Hasanuzzaman on January this year and demanded Tk 2 lakh from him. The principal later filed an extortion case with Sadar Police Station, the OC said.
