Clash over control of market in Jhenidah:
10 including two cops injured
Ten people, including a police sub-inspector and an Ansar commander, were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Goalpara Bazar under Jhenidah Sadar upazila yesterday.
Police and locals said there was a long-standing conflict between the villagers of Kashimpur and Putia over taking control of Goalpara Bazar.
On Saturday, some people of Kashimpur village locked in an altercation with one Habib Joarder of Putia village over control of Goalpara bazaar and at one stage, they attacked Joarder's rice mill at the bazar.
As a sequel to Saturday's incident, the people of the two villages, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked each other at around 6:00am yesterday. Hearing the news, police and Ansars rushed to spot, fired blank shots and tear gas shells to disperse the clashing groups.
At least ten people, including Sub-Inspector (SI) Sunit Kumar Gayen, Ansar Commander Shamsul Alam, were injured during the clash that continued for an hour.
Of the injured SI Sunit Kumar, Ansar Commander Shamsul Alam and villagers Ohidul Islam, Alamgir Hossain, Ali Ahmed, and Rustom Ali were admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital while the rest given first aid.
Police arrested three people on the spot and took them to sadr Police Station. They are Ujjal, Pikul and Alim. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further clash.
