Awami League (AL) activists formed a human chain on Rajshahi deputy commissioner's (DC) office premises yesterday noon demanding reinvestigation into Putia AL leader Shahbaz murder case. They alleged that Baneswar union AL president Md Sattar Sheikh was involved in the murder as he, at a television interview last month, said he had known about Shahbaz's murder beforehand. The agitating AL men alleged that they were holding the protest rally in Rajshahi city as local police in Puthia did not allow them to do so in Baneswar. They handed over a memorandum to DC Muhammad Delwar Bakht during the human chain programme. Shahbaz's brother Tajul Islam and daughter Shapla Khatun also joined the human chain. Md Shahbaz Ali, the union AL organising secretary, was killed during a village arbitration in Baneswar on January 8, said Ziaul Alam, officer-in-charge of Puthia. He added the murder case is now under trial as police pressed charges against all 21 accused five months ago. When contacted, Sattar Sheikh termed the human chain a conspiracy to tarnish his image since he declared for contesting the upcoming Union Parishad election. “A few AL workers persuaded some of Shahbaz's family members to hold the protest rally. BNP leader Dulal who wants to contest the election influenced them”, Sattar told this correspondent. About his interview, Sattar said, the television broadcasted his comment after distorting it. Abdur Razzak Dulal, president of the union BNP denied that he was behind the protest rally against Sattar. He said he would contest the UP election and expressed his solidarity with the demand for reinvestigation of Shahbaz murder case.
