At least six cows died of black quarter, a bacterial disease, in last two days in Char Bhobanipur and Char Joinpur villages in Pabna Sadar upazila, livestock department claimed. Locals, however, said ten cows affected with the same disease died in the two villages. “The cows died of black quarter, a bacterial disease. Cows up to one year old are infected with the disease. The flood water that washed the char area might be the cause of the disease,” Dr Md Saiful Islam, district livestock officer (DLO), said yesterday. "The infected cows survive one or two days. They die if they do not get treatment immediately. There are over four thousand cattle in the two villages. We have taken initiative to provide vaccine to the animals there," he added. “The infected cows died suddenly. We are unable to examine the disease immediately,” said Tazem Sheikh, a resident of Char Bhobanipur village. A team of experts from the district livestock department visited the affected area on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, several villagers alleged negligence of livestock officials and taking of money by people introducing as livestock officials for providing vaccine. “Often we do not get the livestock officials in our village although our animals are facing disease. Recently a livestock official came to the village and provided vaccine in exchange of money,” said Abdul Majid of Char Bhobanipur village. Refuting the allegation, the DLO said, "Livestock officials do not take money. Some other people may have cheated the villagers. We have asked the villagers to check identity of the livestock officials by watching their ID cards.”
