Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation will for an indefinite strike in 16 northern districts from today to realise its 10-point demand. The demands include withdrawal of 'false' cases filed against transport workers, unconditional release of transport workers, and end of extortion on the highways and 'harassment' of transport workers by the law enforcers. In a press release yesterday, Mujibur Rahman, general secretary of the northern region of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation, said they will go for an indefinite strike from Monday as their ultimatum given to the authorities concerned on September 27 ended yesterday without yielding positive results. Transport leaders of the 16 northern district units of Bangladesh Road Transport Federation held a meeting at a community centre in Dinajpur town on September 27. From the meeting, they urged the authorities concerned to meet their demands by October 3. Otherwise, they threatened to start an indefinite strike from October 4. "As the government did not pay heed to our demands, we have no alternative but to go for an indefinite strike,' Mujibar Rahman said in the press release. Transport workers yesterday brought out a procession in Dinajpur town in support of their 10-point demand. Addressing a rally in the town, they urged the government to meet their demands. At the rally, Dinajpur Transport Workers Union President Mohammad Khandaker said their strike will continue until their demands are met.
