Heroin worth Tk 1.5 cr seized from night coach, five held
BDR personnel seized heroin worth about Tk 1.5 crore from a Dhaka-bound night coach from Burimari land port in Lalmonirhat town on Wednesday night.
They arrested five people, suspecting their involvement in smuggling the contraband item. The arrestees are bus passengers Parimol Chandra Roy, 35, Ziaur Rahman, 32, and Alamgir Hossain,40, and bus driver Ponir Hossain,42, and helper Dulal Miah, 32.
BDR men later handed over the arrestees to Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station with the seized heroin.
Commanding Officer (CO) of Lalmonirhat 31 Rifles Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Aslam Hossain said a taskforce led by BDR personnel searched the Dhaka-bound night coach in the town at around 10:30pm and found 1.5 Kg heroin in a polythene bag.
Police yesterday produced the arrestees in the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court, seeking a five-day remand. But the court granted only two days' remand.
Meanwhile, BDR destroyed huge seized contraband items including 27,000 bottles of phensidyl syrup at 41 Rifles Battalion headquarters in Satkhira on Wednesday.
The paramilitary troops seized wine, yaba tablets and phensidyl worth Tk 2.07 crore in separate drives in the district in the last eight months.
The drugs were destroyed in presence of Khulna BDR Sector Commander Colonel Khondaker Obaidul Ahsan, Satkhira 41 Rifles Battalion Commander Lt Col Enayet Karim, Satkhira Deputy Commissioner Abdus Samad, Satkira Municipality Mayor Sheikh Ashraful Islam and officials of the Narcotics Control Department.
