Two housewives killed for dowry in 2 districts

Two housewives were strangled by their husbands allegedly for dowry in Khulna and Comilla districts on Sunday night. The victims were identified as Mita Begum, 22, wife of Gofur Malik of Magurkhona village in Dumuria upazila of Khulna, and Arzu begum, 22, wife of Giasuddin of Manikganga village in Nangolkot upazila of Comilla. In Khulna, Gofur Malik, 30, picked up a quarrel with his wife Mita Begum as she refused to bring money as dowry from her parents on Sunday night, reports UNB. At one stage, Gofur beat up Mita and strangled her. Police arrested Gofur following a case filed by victim's father Zamir Hossain with Dumuria Police Station. Gafur's mother Hamida Begum, 50, brothers Abdur Sabur, 35, and Rafique, 25 were taken to the police station for quizzing. In Commilla, Arzu Begum was strangled by her husband allegedly for dowry at Manikganga village in Nangolkot upazila. Police quoted locals as saying that Arzu's husband Giasuddin strangled her following a quarrel over dowry the same night. Police recovered the body and sent it to Comilla Sadar Hospital for autopsy. They arrested Giasuddin. A case was filed against him under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
