SUST expels 5 BCL men

The authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology yesterday expelled five activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) temporarily on charge of their involvement in Monday's incident that left a JCD activist critically injured. The authorities took the decision at a meeting and also formed a three-member probe committee headed by Prof Ilyas Uddin Biswas, treasurer of the university. The expelled BCL men are Shahidullah Maruf and Belayet Hossain of computer science and engineering department, Imran Ahmed of statistics department, and Sayed and Tuhin of political studies department. On Monday, Ashiqur Rahman Ayon, an activist of JCD and also a fourth year student of petroleum and geo resources department, was stabbed allegedly by a group of BCL men on the campus. Critically injured Ashiqur is now undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital. Witnesses said, Ashiqur came under attack by the BCL men numbering about 7 to 8 at around 11:45am as he came out of the class at the E building on the campus. They stabbed Ashique with sharp weapons causing serious injuries to his shoulder and head. He was immediately rushed to the hospital. According to sources, the incident was a sequel to a previous enmity.
