Road barricade by transport workers
Transport workers here barricaded Gaibandha-Palashbari road following arrest of three of their colleagues yesterday.
Road communication of the district with rest of the country remained disrupted for long six hours.
Police said, Chief Judicial Magistrate Jalaluddin was returning from Dhaka to his workplace in Gaibandha by a night coach of Hanif Enterprise.
The magistrate asked supervisor of the coach to drop him in front of Gaibandha Circuit House.
But ignoring the request the coach driver took the vehicle to Gaibandha bus terminal.
At this, the magistrate ordered police to take action against three workers of the coach including driver Ayub Ali and helper Alal.
Police arrested the three persons and sent them to jail hazat.
Soon after the news spread among the members of Gaibandha transport union, the workers created huge barricade on Gaibandha-Palashbari highway demanding unconditional release of the three arrestees.
Additional Police Superintendent Jahangir Hossain rushed to the spot and asked union leaders to withdraw the agitation. The agitated workers besieged the ASP and demanded unconditional release of the detained workers and threatened to go for an indefinite bus strike.
Later at about 1 am, the leaders of union held a meeting with district administration following which the three workers were released and the road blockade was withdrawn at around 12:00 noon.
