Procession, rally for safe drinking water

Several hundred people yesterday brought out a procession, formed a human chain, held a rally and submitted a memorandum to the mayor demanding safe drinking water through pipeline at Poladanga in the town. The processionists hailing from Poladanga area of ward no.14 under Chapainawabganj municipality chanted different slogans, formed a human chain in front of local press club and held a rally there to press home their lone demand. They said, Chapainawabganj municipality was established in 1903. Poladanga was included in the municipality since then. But the area is still deprived of water supply although it is only 1.25 kilometres away from the municipality office. People are facing acute scarcity of drinking water due to arsenic contamination in tubewell water. Although people often suffered from various diseases for lack of safe drinking water, municipality did not supply water through pipeline despite placing of the demand several times. Shahidul Huda Alok, Saiful Islam, Shafiqul Islam, Shariful Islam, Masud Rana and Hasan Ali spoke at the rally. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the mayor of Chapainawabganj municipality.
