'Punish culprit for throwing acid on three women'

Hundreds of people of Protap village under Sadullapur upazila agitated yesterday demanding punishment to a person for throwing acid on three women. The protesters, carrying festoon and banners, paraded 20 kilometres to reach Gaibandha town and formed a human chain on Gaibandha-Palashbari Road in front of the offices of Deputy Commissioner and Police Superintendent. They also held a brief rally where Tahmidur Rahman Siju, president Bangladesh Chhatra League, Gaibandha district unit, Rahat Mahmud Rony, Ishrat Jahan Rita, Moinul Islam, Joynto Proshad, spoke. The speakers said armyman Shamsul Alam of village Protap under Sadullapur upazila threw acid on Rehena Akhter, her mother Razia Siddiqa and sister Ruma Akhter of same village on September 14. As they refused a marriage proposal, an enraged Shamsul Alam threw the acid at dead of night when the victims were asleep, they said. The victims were taken to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Later, Rehena was shifted to burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated. She is still fighting for life. The protesters demanded capital punishment to the accused for such a heinous act. They also threatened greater movement for arrest of the three accused including two accomplices involved in the incident. The processionists later handed over a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner and Police Superintendent.
