Indigenous people of Jhakrabil area under Moghban Union of Rangamati Sadar upazila formed a human chain in the district town yesterday demanding withdrawal of the government decision to set up a university at Bilaichhar Para in the union. They also urged the government to stop land acquisition at the site selected for the proposed Rangamati University of Science and Technology (Rust) and submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through the deputy commissioner. Hundreds of indigenous people joined the human chain in front of the Court Building in the morning. They said the government has taken up the project to evict them from their own land. Addressing a rally at the venue, the speakers said thousands of indigenous people were displaced after construction of Kaptai Dam in 1960. So, the project taken up by the present government is another move to make the people of Bilaichhar Para homeless, they alleged. The indigenous people said if their demand for cancellation of the site for the proposed university is not met, they will launch a greater agitation programme.
