2 drug peddlers jailed for life, 6 held with drugs

A Faridpur court yesterday jailed two drug peddlers for life while law enforcers rounded up six people in Gazipur, Khulna, Shariatpur and Jessore the day before with huge drugs. A court in Faridpur yesterday sentenced two drug peddlers to life imprisonment, reports our correspondent. The lifers are Bahar Sheikh, 26, of Itna village under Lohagora of Narail district and Nazrul Islam Mridah, 38, of Ikrail village under Alfadanga upazila in Faridpur. According to the prosecution in brief, a team of Rab-8 arrested Bahar and Nazrul from a passenger bus of Zaker Paribahan with 175 bottles of contraband phensidyl on 17 April 2009. Later, a case was lodged against them with Bhanga police station. On completion of hearing, Mujibor Rahman, Special Sessions Judge in Faridpur, yesterday handed down the verdict in presence of the accused. Meanwhile, six alleged drug peddlers were arrested along with huge sex stimulating yaba tablets, liquor and phensidyl in Gazipur, Khulna, Shariatpur and Jessore districts Sunday, reports UNB. In Gazipur, Detective Branch police arrested two drug peddlers along with 150 pieces of yaba tablets from a house at Aouchpara village in Tongi police station Sunday afternoon. The arrestees are Nahidur Rahman Khan Shiblu, 21, son of Jabbar Ali of village Kalameshwar in Sadar upazila and Tanveer Ahmed Rajon, 23, son of Altaf Hossain of village Dewli in Bakerganj upazila of Barisal. DB police said, on a secret information, they raided the house of Hafizur Rahman and arrested Shiblu and Rajon along with the tablets. In Khulna, a team of Rab-6 arrested Kohinoor Begum and Mamtaz Begum from a Khulna-bound train from Sayedpur at Rupsha Rail Station Sunday evening and seized huge yaba tablets searching their bodies. In Shariatpur, a team of Rab-8 conducted a drive at Damudya land port and arrested drug peddler Abul Kalam Choukidar, 30, along with 132 cans of beer and four bottles of whisky early Sunday. BDR members on Sunday recovered 1600 bottles of banned Indian phensidyl syrup from a private car at Rajapur village under Benapole police station in Jhenidah yesterday, reports a correspondent. Benapole BDR Camp Commander Siddikur Rahman said, acting on a tip-off, BDR members chased the car on Rajapur-Jessore road. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the drug peddlers managed to flee, leaving behind the car on the road.
