19 shops gutted in two Noakhali upazilas

At least 19 shops were gutted in separate fire incidents in Kabirhat and Begumganj upazilas here on Saturday night and early yesterday. Locals said four shops were gutted in a fire that broke out in Kalamia Bridge area of Kabirhat upazila early yesterday. They said the fire broke out at a grocer's shop and soon engulfed the adjacent three shops at about 1:00am. On information, fire fighters from Maijdee rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze with the help of local people after one hour of hectic efforts. Affected shop owner claimed that cash and valuables worth Tk 1.50lakh were gutted in the blaze. In another incident, at least 15 shops were gutted by a devastating fire at Choumuhani Hossain Market in Begumganj upazila on Saturday night. Fire Service and local sources said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a cloth shop of the market at about 11:15pm and soon engulfed the adjacent 14 shops. On information, Fire Service personnel from Choumuhani and Maijdee rushed in and put out the blaze after one hour of frantic efforts with the help of the local people. The affected shop owners claimed that the extent of loss from the fire could go up to Tk 1 crore.
