CVASU resumes office work with police help
Authorities of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) resumed administrative activities with police help yesterday as Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) enforced an indefinite siege since August 29.
At around 11:00am yesterday, officials and staffs of the university in presence of police broke open the locks of the academic building and two faculty buildings.
Activists of BCL CVASU unit locked the administrative and academic buildings and enforced indefinite siege on the campus on August 29 demanding resignation of the Vice Chancellor (VC) and protesting the authorities' decisions to expel and punish nine of their leaders and activists.
The university authorities on August 28 expelled five BCL activists including its convener for lifetime and punished four other students for assaulting and misbehaving with some teachers and staffs of the university.
Academic activities at the university remained closed since August 29 while a 22-day Eid vacation started in September.
Immediately after resumption of CVASU activities, a group of BCL men of the university and some of other activists from different city colleges yesterday blocked Zakir Hossain Road in front of the university for about 20 minutes.
Officer-in-charge (OC) Iftekher Hossain of Khulshi police station said students of the university, with the help of some students from Omar Gani MES College, staged a sit-in on the busy road for sometime.
A few BCL leaders and activists stayed in the male hostel but they did not stage any demonstration on the campus as a large member of police were deployed there since morning.
Contacted, expelled convener of BCL CVASU unit said they were confined to the campus by police.
Earlier, BCL CVASU leaders at a press conference on Friday afternoon had vowed to stage indefinite sit-in on the campus from Saturday.
