JCD rivals clash in Barisal, 8 hurt
Police foil programmes, arrest 10 activists
Eight people were injured as two rival factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) clashed in the city yesterday.
Police charged baton to disperse the clashing groups and arrested 10 from both the factions.
Police, witnesses and JCD sources said a faction of city unit JCD led by city JCD secretary Ata-e-Rabbi organised a human chain programme in front of Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall at 11:30am in the morning.
The programme was called to protest lodging of a general diary with Barisal kotwali police station on Friday by Afroza Khanam Nasrin, city JCD vice president against advocate Nazrul Islam Rajon, central BNP assistant organising secretary and Barisal district BNP joint convener.
To counter the programme, followers of Nasrin called a rally at the same venue same time to protest alleged rebuking her over cell phone by BNP leader Rajon.
Police intervened into the matter and ordered both the factions to keep away from the place. As the JCD activists ignored the order and locked in clashes, police charged baton to disperse them.
At least eight JCD activists including Abu Jafar Badal, JCD leader and former secretary of BM College Students Union, were injured in factional clashes and baton charge of police, witnesses said.
Police arrested 10 JCD activists and leaders of both the groups from the spot.
The arrestees are Ata-e-Rabbi, city secretary, Afroza Khanam Nasrin, city vice president, Imtiaz Hossain, ward 11 secretary, and Shahriar Islam, Nowshed Alam Russel, Bashir Hossain Rimon. Mahmud Hassan Dulal, Naimul Islam, Bakir Hossain, Kalu, activists of JCD.
Followers of Ata-e Rabbi protesting his arrest blocked road and ransacked two rickshaws in front of Govt Barisal College at about 12:30pm.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Sub-inspector Kamalesh, officer-in-charge of Barisal kotwali police station, said police intervened into the matter to maintain law and order in the city and disperse unauthorised rally.
The arrestees would be sent to court after lodging a case under Sections 59 and 30 of Metropolitan Police Ordinance, the OC added.
