Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) went berserk on the campus on Friday night as the vice chancellor did not meet their demand to shift first terminal examinations of second and third year classes by 15 days from September 23. The unruly students, who staged demonstration to press home their demand either for shifting the date or removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, snapped electricity lines of all dormitories and residence of the vice chancellor at 11:20pm. They vandalised several dormitories and damaged a power sub station inside the campus. As the entire campus plunged into darkness and the demonstrators continued rampant vandalism, panicked students staying in the dormitories started screaming and running for safety, said eyewitnesses. Earlier at 10:00pm the same day, the unruly students of second and third year classes confined the vice chancellor to the administrative building as he refused to shift the date for first terminal examinations. At around 12:30am, police rescued the vice chancellor. Second and third year students of different undergraduate courses on Friday morning appealed to the vice chancellor to shift the date for first terminal examinations as they could not study properly because of fasting during the holy Ramadan, said a source of Kuet. At around at 4:00pm, they lay siege to the vice chancellor's residence and chanted slogans in favour of their demand. But the vice chancellor insisted on his decision not to shift the date even by a day from September 23, said Director of Student Affairs Prof Dr Shibendu Shekhar Sikder. "The academic council of the university took the decision to hold first terminal examinations of second and third year classes of six undergraduate courses from September 23. So, the question of shifting the date does not arise at all," Prof Shibendu said. The university is scheduled to reopen today after the Eid vacation. Riot police have been deployed on the campus to avert further unwanted situation.
