20 hurt as AL, BNP clash in 2 Noakhali upazilas

At least 20 people were injured in two separate clashes between the activists of Awami League and BNP in Sonaimuri and Begumganj upazilas of Noakhali district on Friday. Awami League and BNP activists clashed at Amishapara Bazar under Sonaimuri upazila on Friday night, leaving 15 people from both sides injured. Witnesses said the trouble began at around 9:00pm when Amishapara union AL activists Jahiruddin Bablu, Shamsuddin, Omar Faruque and Suman beat up local Jubo Dal worker Manik, also an accused in Jubo League leader Shah Alam murder case, at the bazar. They also allegedly ransacked some shops owned by Jubo Dal men. As the news spread, local BNP leaders and workers led by Union BNP Secretary Md Bablu swooped on the Awami League leaders and workers, at the bazar, leading to a clash between the two sides. Of the injured Bablu, Manik, Firoz, Anwar, Zakir, Sumon, Jahir and Mizanur Rahman were admitted to Sonaimuri Upazila Health Complex and Noakhali General Hospital while the rest given first aid. Being informed, law enforcers from Sonaimuri Police Station went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonaimuri Police Station Nazibul Islam said the situation is now under control. In Begumganj, at least five people were injured as BNP and AL activists clashed at the upazila headquarters on Friday evening. Witnesses said the clash began as a group of people attacked an Eid reunion of Chhatra Dal upazila unit. The attackers also ransacked the dais raised for the programme. Chhatra Dal blamed the local AL men for the attack.
