A three feet long brown colour porcupine (Sajaru) was caught at a fish enclosure at Shamddarkhali village under Morrelganj upazila of Bagerhat district on Monday night. The fish enclosure belongs to Bibekananda Boiragi of the same village. The rare porcupine remained tied to a tree on the premises of Bibekananda's house until 2:00pm yesterday. When contacted, Bibekananda said he saw the porcupine sitting near the enclosure to catch fish. "I tactfully netted the porcupine and later brought it to my house", he added. On receipt of delayed information, the forest guards of Chandpai range under Sundarban Forest Division went to Bibekananda's house yesterday and rescued the porcupine from his possession. The porcupine was not in good shape as some of its spines were pulled out by curious people, said officer-in-charge of Chandpai range Md Shahabuddin. Necessary care would be taken for someday and then it would be released in the Sundarbans, the forest officer said. This species of porcupine is virtually on verge of extinction from the Sundarbans under adverse impact of climate change after cyclones Sidr and Aila, he added.
