'Hold high the dignity of independent judiciary'

Chief Justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim yesterday said lawyers and judges should work sincerely to reduce the number of pending cases and to remove the complexities in the process of trial. He was addressing a reception accorded to him by Sylhet District Bar Association at Bar Library hall. District and Sessions Judge Md Momin Ullah, Deputy Commissioner Abu Syed Md Hashim and District Bar Association General Secretary AKM Shomiul Alam also spoke at the function with Bar Association President EU Shahidul Islam in the chair. He said the people have already started getting benefits of the separation of Judiciary. So, the dignity of the independent judiciary should be kept high. The people concerned should work unitedly for the sake of ensuring quick disposal of cases, the chief justice said, adding that all should remain alert so that the litigants do not face harassment anyway. He said, "People want a peaceful atmosphere on the court premises and we all should remain sincere and work to that end." The leaders of the association urged the chief justice to establish circuit bench of the High Court at Sylhet divisional headquarters, fill up the vacant posts of judges to reduce the number of pending cases and to take effective measures to stop extra-judicial killings. Later, the chief justice visited the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hazrat Shahporan (RA) and offered special prayers.
