4 executed in 3 jails on Wednesday night
Four convicted killers were executed in Faridpur, Sylhet and Natore jails at or around midnight on Wednesday.
In Faridpur, Mirajul Sheikh, 27, of West Kafura village under Sadar upazila was executed on Wednesday midnight for killing his wife in 2002.
The convict was son of Abdul Sheikh of the village, reports our correspondent.
Execution of Mirajul was carried out at 12:05am at Faridpur district jail in presence of Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Helaluddin Ahmed, Superintendent of Police (SP) Awlad Ali Fakir, Civil Surgeon Sirajul Islam Talukdar, Jail Super M A Razzaque and Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Md Shafiqur Reza Biswas.
Faridpur jail sources said, Mirajul burnt his wife Shefali Begum to death just 21 days after their marriage on 23 October in 2002.
A murder case was lodged with Kotwali police station in this connection on the same day by Saidur Rahman, brother of Shefali of Char Gendua village under Sadar upazila.
Then sub inspector (SI) of Kotwali police submitted charge-sheet against the accused. Judge Md Afzal Hossain of Women and Children Repression Prevention Court in Faridpur sentenced Mirajul to death on July 6, 2004.
The High Court and also the Supreme Court handed down the same verdict in 2007 and 2009 against Mirajul. He sought the President's mercy on July 27 this year but it was denied.
In Sylhet, execution of two convicted murderers were carried out at Sylhet Central Jail on Wednesday midnight.
This was the first incident of execution in Sylhet jail in the last 70 years, reports our staff correspondent.
Sabul Miah of Renga Daudpur village at Dakkhin Surma upazila in Sylhet and Alamuddin Swapan of Mirar Paton village at Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar district were awarded capital punishment in 2003.
DIG prisons Fazlur Rahman, Magistrate Shahidul Alam and Sylhet Civil Surgeon Foyez Ahmed were present during the execution.
Jail authorities in Rajshahi executed a convict around midnight on Wednesday for killing his wife in 1998, reports our staff correspondent.
Execution of Abu Bokkor, 43, son of Khayer Ghorami of Lalpur upazila in Natore was carried out at around 11.01pm, said Deputy Jailer Muhammad Abdullah.
The jail authorities handed over Bokkor's body to his family at dawn. His brother Nazrul Islam received the body.
Bokkor was at Rajshahi central jail since the death sentence by the Women and Children Repression Prevention Court of Natore in 2001 for murdering his wife Rongila following a dispute over dowry in February 1998.
