Seven hurt as age-old lockup roof collapses

Seven arrestees were injured as about 100-year-old roof of the lockup (hajat khana) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station collapsed yesterday morning. The injured are Mohammad Sahin, 40 son of Souhur Rahman of Ajaipur in the district town. Mokhtar Ali, 25, son of Fakir Mohammad, and Dalim, 22, son of Imran Ali of Ramjibonpur village under Sadar upazila, Yasin, 32, and Mizanur Rahman, 28, son of Nur Baksh Ali, Himel Ali, 24, son of Hammad Ali, and Shahjada Malek Dollar, 30, son of Harunur Rashid of Ramkrishnapur under Chapainawabganj municipal area. Ahsanul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station, said police arrested the seven on various charges, raiding different areas on Tuesday night and kept them in the lock-up. The roof of the room collapsed when the arrestees were asleep at around 5:15am, he added. Six of the injured were given first aid at Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital and later sent to the district jail. Seriously injured Mohammad Sahin is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Immediately after the incident, Deputy Commissioner KM Ali Azam, acting Superintendent of Police khondaker Shamim Hossain, Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Ruhul Amin and Chapainawabganj Municipality Mayor Ataur Rahman visited the police station. The building of Sadar Police Station was built in 1918. Police personnel said they have been working here amid life risk as the building was declared abandoned in 1999 by Public Works Department (PWD). PWD sources said the construction of a new building for the police station is going on and likely to be complete by December this year.
