Couple commits 'suicide'
A couple yesterday committed suicide in Dimla upazila of the district following a dowry-related feud between the families of the two.
The deceased were identified as Jaminur Rahman, 23, son of Safaruddin of Akash kuri village and his wife Mukta, 20, daughter of Mubarak Hossain of Tit Para village under the upazila.
Locals said Jaminur married Mukta a year ago. At the time of marriage, Mukta's parents made a commitment to give Tk 30,000 as dowry. As they failed to give the money, Jaminur's parents became angry and picked up a quarrel with Mukta's family.
In the wake of such unpleasant situation, Jaminur and Mukta committed suicide by taking poison yesterday morning. Neighbours and family members brought the two to Dimla Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared them dead.
Mukta's father alleged that Jaminur's parents created mental pressure on his daughter and son-in-law to realise Tk 30,000 from him.
Denying the allegation, Jaminur's father Safaruddin said Mukta and Jaminur committed suicide following an altercation over a trivial matter.
Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam of Dimla Police Station said two unnatural death cases were filed in this regard.
