'Robber, extortionist' beaten to death in Comilla, Meherpur

A suspected robber and an alleged extortionist were beaten to death in Comilla and Meherpur yesterday and the day before. A suspected robbers was beaten to death by a mob at Pachhim Jangalia village in Adarsha Sadar upazila of Comilla yesterday, reports UNB. Police said, an armed gang entered the house of Saudi expatriate Abdul Qader by breaking open the door at 2am. The robbers tied up the house members and beat up Qader's father Sirajul Islam, 55, and mother Anwara Begum, 40. They then took away 7.5 tolas of gold and Tk 47,000 in cash. Hearing the hue and cry, locals chased the fleeing robbers and caught one of them. They gave him a good thrashing, leaving him dead on the spot. The deceased could not be identified. On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered four cocktails from the spot. In Meherpur, an alleged extortionist was beaten to death at Kanthalpota village in Gangni upazila on Monday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mirza Hossain of Dighalkanto village of the upazila. Police said, Mirza and four of his accomplices gave death threat to a businessman of Kaliabokri village under Damurhuda PS of Chuadanga district demanding toll. Being furious over the incident, the villagers chased them and caught Mirza and beat him up mercilessly leaving him dead on the spot. His accomplices however managed to escape. In Narayanganj, a gang of robbers coming in a trawler stormed into three houses one after another at remote Alir Tek union in Sadar upazila and looted cash and valuables last Wednesday. Police quoting locals said the gang numbering 30-35 first raided the house of businessman Lal Mia at dead of night. Later, they took the house members hostage at gun point and looted Tk 4 lakh in cash and 20 tolas of gold. Later, the gang swooped on the adjacent houses of Millat Mia and Abdul Awal and looted cash and gold ornaments worth Tk 5 lakh. In Rajshahi, police arrested four alleged robbers along with a firearm on Wednesday last while they were preparing to commit a robbery in Haldigachhi Bottola area of Charghat upazila. The arrestees were identified Altab Ali, 24, Alamgir Hossain, 20, and Shahin Alam, 19, sons of inter-district robber gang member Nazimuddin of Tepukuria village in Bagha upazila and Ujjal, 18, son of Yajul Hossain of the same village. On a secret information that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in Bottola area police raided the area late at night and arrested them after a hot chase while others managed to flee the scene. Later, police recovered one country made revolver, some sharp weapons and a hammer from their possession.
