Robbers shoot dead BNP activist in Meherpur

A BNP activist was shot dead allegedly by a gang of armed robbers at Gopalpur in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur early yesterday. The victim was identified as Azim Uddin Babu, 30, son of Arshad Ali of the village. Police said, robbers, numbering 20-25, swooped on the houses of Anser Ali, Abdur Rashid and Arshed Ali of the village and looted valuables taking the members of the three houses hostage at gunpoint at about 1.30am. As Babu tried to resist the gang along with some of his neighbours the robbers opened fire, leaving Babu dead on the spot. The robbers then fled the scene with the booty. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy in the morning. Police later arrested two people in this connection. Another gang on Monday looted five houses at Baniapur village in Sadar upazila just an hour before the robbery at Gopalpur. In Faridpur, a gang of robbers looted a house at Brahamman Kanda village in the outskirt of the town early Monday, reports our correspondent. Family sources said, the robbers looted 28 tolas of gold, 7 cell phones and Tk 7 lakh in cash from the house of Shyamol Banarjee, an eminent businessman and also the industry and commerce secretary of Faridpur district Awami Leaque. Shushil Banarjee, younger brother of Shyamol Banarjee said around 15 to 16 robbers entered the house breaking open the gate of the two storied building. The robbers looted the valuables at gunpoint at about 2am, he added.
