Jubo Dal leader in Barisal murdered by rival faction
Shah Alam Chunnu, Wazirpur upazila Jubo Dal secretary, has been killed allegedly by the cadres of a rival faction.
Solaiman, a Jubo Dal activist and younger brother of the victim, blamed Ahmedul Kabir Biplob, upazila Jubo Dal president for the killing.
Local sources said, two factions of Wazirpur upazila Jubo Dal arranged separate iftar parties on two sides of a field at Otra under Barokota union on Monday.
One faction led by Biplob, loyal to former local lawmaker and central Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal organised its iftar party, on the eastern side of Otra Natun Balur Math.
The rival faction led by Chunnu, loyal to Sarfuddin Santu, a defeated BNP MP candidate of the constituency, arranged its iftar party on the western side of the same venue.
A few members of Chunnu group allegedly had threatened the rival faction over a triffling issue before iftar creating a tension among the activists.
After the iftar when Chunnu was returning home with JCD activist Kabir on a motorbike, Biplob faction intercepted them in front of the house of Mojibur Mridha at Otra at about 7:30pm.
Although Kabir succeeded to flee, Chunnu was caught and mercilessly beaten up by Biplob and his associates Monir Master, Nurul Huq, Ruhul Amin, and Parvez, witnesses said.
Locals resened Chunnu in a serious condition and sent him to Barisal SBMCH after the attackers left the scene.
Chunnu was shifted to DMCH on the same night where he succumbed to head injuries at 10:30am yesterday.
As the report of his death reached the area, followers of Santu faction of BNP and Jubo Dal faction of Chunnu brought out angry procession at Wazirpur upazila town 12:00pm chanting slogans against Alal.
Supporters of Chunnu also attacked the house of local Jubo Dal activist Ruhul Amin at Jugirkanda of Otra at 12:30pm and burnt his motorcycle.
Sukumar Roy, officer-in-charge of Wazirpur police station, said he visited the spots and police detained Shamim and Firoz, two Jubo Dal activists of Biplob faction for interrogation.
Earlier, a case was lodged with Wazirpur police station on Monday night by Biplob against Chunnu and his five associates accusing them of attacking the iftar party arranged by his faction, the OC added.
