'Robber' killed in mob beating

Two injured, nine others caught while fleeing

A 'robber' was beaten to death, two were injured and nine arrested in two separate incidents in Narsingdi and Chapainawabganj early yesterday. Mob beat dead an alleged robber and injured two others at Sorrabad village under Belabo upazila of Narsingdi early yesterday, reports a correspondent. The dead was identified as Kajol, 32, and the injured are Ripon, 25, and Nurul Islam, 28. Police said a gang of eight to ten swooped on the house of Jinnat Ali Bepari of Sorrabad village at around 2:00am. Sensing the presence of the robbers, Jinnat Ali informed his neighbours about the attack of the robbers over mobile phone. On receiving the calls, the neighbours encircled the house, caught three of the gang and beat them up mercilessly. Kajol, one of the gang members succumbed to his injuries on way to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, while the two others were handed over to Belabo police. The other members of the gang, however, managed to flee the scene, sources said. In Chapainawabganj, police arrested nine alleged robbers at Biana village under Gomostapur upazila early yesterday, reports our correspondent. The arrestees are Aktar Ali Nantu, 45, of Mirzapur, Rezaul Karim Rozbul, 28, of Raninagar, Sadequl Islam, 30, Abdul Latif Bhutto, 45, Shariful Islam, 22, Rabiul Islam Robu, 40, Tariqul Islam, 35, of Darigachha, Ismail Hossain, 39, of Kamalpur -- all under Shibganj upazila and Taher Ali, 35, of Patharpuja village under Gomostapur upazila in the district. Sub Inspector (SI) Abdul Mannan of Gomostapur police station said, among the arrestees Rezaul Karim Rozbul and Taher Ali are on the wanted list of Gomostapur police station. He said a group of 20 to 22 of inter--district robbers attacked the house of one Khurshid 'pir' at about 2:00am and looted about Tk 4000, 5 tolas of gold ornaments, 5 mobile phones and clothes. Hearing the hue and cry of the house members, locals chased them and held the robbers. After a good beating they handed them over to the Nandipur union council. Being informed police rushed to the spot and arrested them at around 10:00am. Some money, gold ornaments, mobile phones and clothes were recovered from them. The other robbers managed to flee the scene.
