One killed, 40 hurt as villagers clash

An elderly man was killed and 40 others were injured as rival villagers locked in clashes in Netrakona and Thakurgaon districts on Saturday. A man was killed and 20 others were injured in a clash at Ashodpur village under Khaliajuri upazila in Netrakona district on Saturday night, reports our correspondent. The dead was identified as Firoz Chowdhury, 65, of the village. Police and locals said, there was a dispute between Sohal Mia and Aptu Mia of the village for the last few months over a piece of land. On Saturday night, following an altercation between Sohal Mia and Aptu Mia, two rival groups attacked each others with sharp and lethal weapons. During the clash, Firoz Chowdhury was killed on the spot while 20 others were injured. Seriously injured Mafiz Mia, Dilbahar Begum, Faizuddin and Sakander Mia were sent to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital. Others were treated at local health complex. A case was filed with Khaliajuri police station in this connection. Police arrested Rukonuddin, Sohel Mia and Bablu Mia from the spot. In Thakurgaon, at least 20 people including women and children were injured in a fierce clash on Saturday afternoon at Ranhatta village under Haripur upazila. Officer-in-charge of Haripur police station Humayun Kabir told this correspondent over cell phone that Mojibor Rahman and Monsur Alam of the same village had a longstanding feud over a piece of land. On the day Mojibor went to the land to plough. Seeing this Monsur came to the spot and asked Mojibor to leave the place which led to an altercation. Hearing their altercation, supporters of the twomen gathered there. At one stage they engaged in a fierce clash leaving 20 people injured from both sides. Of the injured, Monsur, 50, Sher Mohammad, 55, Osman, 28, Abeda, 40, Akkas, 8, Mahmud, 40, Sabeda, 37, Lutfar Rahman, 40, Shahidul, 30, Shukurdi, 60, Jahangir, 18, Samad, 65, Mojibor, 40 and Feroza were admitted to Haripur health complex. As their condition deteriorated, Abeda and Monsur were shifted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital on the same night.
