One killed, 9 hurt as bomb thrown on village meeting
One person was killed and nine others were injured in a bomb attack at Bazrapur village in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district on Saturday night.
The dead is Lokman Hossain Mondol, 48, son of Haran Mondol of the village. According to a UNB report,k Lokman was organising secretary of Bazrapur ward BNP unit.
Police arrested four people in connection with the attack.
Police said Lokman was holding a meeting with some villagers on Bazrapur Primary School premises at around 9:45pm to arrange an Iftar party at the village.
Suddenly, a gang of 15 to 20 appeared there and attacked the villagers with bamboo sticks, iron rods and sharp weapons. At one stage, the gang hurled three bombs, leaving 10 people, including Lokman, seriously injured.
Being informed, a police team led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Rezaul Islam, in-charge of Bhabanipur police camp, went to the spot and sent the injured to Meherpur and Kushtia general hospitals. Lokman succumbed to his injuries on way to Kushtia General Hospital.
Police quoted locals as saying that the gang left the scene chanting slogans of an outlawed party.
Officer-in-Charge Motiar Rahman of Gangni Police Station told this correspondent over cellphone that a conflict between Lokman and Rafiqul over capture of six acres of disputed land at the village might be the reason behind the attack.
"We suspect the hired outlaws lauched in the attack,” the OC said.
After the incident, police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel raided the village and arrested four people, including one Atiar.
The arrestees were taken to Gangani Police Station for quizzing.
