Call to develop Ctg for country's interestSpeakers at discussion in the port city on Friday called for shunning regional outlook to develop Chittagong in the greater interest of the country. They underscored the need for administrative decentralisation and urged the Chittagong people to work together for the development of Chittagong. Greater Chittagong Development Action Committee organised the meeting at Chittagong Press Club auditorium on the occasion of the first death anniversary of its founding Chairman ASM Jamal Uddin. Addressing the meeting as the chief guest newly elected Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Manjur Alam Manju sought cooperation of the committee leaders for development of Chittagong and ensuring urban facilities. Prof Dr Moyeenul Islam was the main speaker while Dr Sheikh Shafiul Azam, former lawmaker M Kafil Uddin and Prof Kamal Uddin took part in the discussion. Development Action Committee Secretary General Prof Muhammad Uddin Chowdhury presented the keynote paper at the meeting with the Dainik Purbokone Editor Taslim Uddin Chowdhury in the chair. 'Set up reservoir for safe water'
Speakers at a roundtable in the port city on Wednesday underscored the need for developing water reservoirs to ensure supply of safe water. ITN Centre of Buet, ITN Sub-centre of Cuet and Chittagong Environmental Journalists Forum jointly organised the roundtable titled “Safe water in Chittagong metropolitan city” at Engineer Abdul Khaleq auditorium of Chittagong Press Club. The speakers said coordinated efforts have to be made rising above political affiliation to develop a proper water management system. To this end there is no alternative to creation of water reservoirs, they said. They called upon Chittagong Wasa, CCC and Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) to work united in this regard. Newly elected Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Manjur Alam Manju, Prof Muhammad Sikander Khan and Advocate Rana Dasgupta of Forum for Planned Chittagong and The Daily Azadi Editor Abdul Malek spokeat the roundtable. Chittagong Press Club (CPC) President Abu Sufian presided over the roundtable moderated by CPC General Secretary Rashed Rouf. Prof Dr Swapan Kumar Palit presented the keynote paper at the roundtable where Chittagong Environmental Journalists Forum General Secretary Aliur Rahman made the address of welcome. A project worth Tk 35 crore has been taken to develop a botanical garden opposite to the golf club at Bhatiary under Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong. State Minister for Environment and Forest Dr Hasan Mahmud said this while he was addressing the closing ceremony of a 15-day tree fair in the port city on Saturday. Department of Forest Chittagong (north) division and district administration organised the fair at Laldighi Maidan. The state minister in his speech said the government has also taken an initiative to go for massive tree plantation along the embankments to develop coastal green belt. In this regard mobile tree sale centres are being opened throughout the country soon. Besides, the government has already declared eleven wildlife zones in the country. Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Sirajul Haq Khan, Chittagong Regional Forest Conservator Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer Badrul Anam Bhuiyan also spoke at the function as the guests with Deputy Commissioner Foyez Ahmad of Chittagong in the chair. Book festival concludes
A four-day book festival ended here on Sunday with call for reading more books to help the society march forward. Chattagram Academy organised the book festival titled “Barshakalin Boi Utsab” at the academy auditorium of Lusai Bhaban at Cheragi Pahar Intersection. Addressing the closing ceremony the speakers called for developing habit of reading more books to help practise of culture and build up enlightened society. Writer Fahmida Amin presided over the function where Dr Obayedul Karim and writer Dr Dilip spoke among others. Construction of road demanded
A citizen's organisation on Saturday demanded construction of a marine driveway from Karnaphuli bridge to Sadarghat to ease traffic congestion in the city. Karnaphuli Bridge-Sadarghat Marine Drive Way Implementation Council made the demand to communication minister through a fax message. The fax message signed by Council Convener Md Nazmul Huda said it would not be possible to achieve the objective of the 3rd Karnaphuli bridge unless a connecting road is developed. A marine driveway from the bridge to Sadarghat would not only ease traffic congestion but also create a scope for the people to take a stroll along the riverbank. Sculpture exhibition begins
A six-day exhibition of clay sculpture by Prof Alok Roy began in the port city on Tuesday. Alliance Française Chittagong organised the exhibition titled “Homage to potter and finger” at its auditorium on the occasion of the 60th birth anniversary of internationally known sculptor. A good number of photographs and installation of the works of Alok Roy are put on display at the exhibition. Alliance Francaise Chittagong President Adil Husain was the chief guest while the Dainik Purbokone Managing Director Dr M Ramizuddin Chowdhury was the special guest at the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition with Alliance Francaise Chittagong Director Dr Samuel Berthet in the chair. The exhibition will remain open to all between 4:00pm and 8:00pm everyday except Friday.
