BCL leader killed in clash for control over sand quarry

A local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was killed and seven others were injured during a clash between two rival groups over control of a sand quarry in the river Dhaleswari in Munshiganj early yesterday. The dead is Md Mamun, 25, vice-president of BCL Munshiganj town unit. Protesting Mamun's death, BCL men staged a demonstration in the district town and vandalised several vehicles and shops. Witnesses said about 10 people of a leaseholder from Narayanganj attacked the men belonging to another leaseholder from Munshiganj while they were collecting money from the sand quarry at around 4:00am. Being hit by the opponents, Mamun, son of Shamsul Huq of Deobhog village under Munshiganj Sadar upazila, fell into the river from a trawler. Later, He was rescued and rushed to a local hospital where the doctors declared him dead at around 5:55am. Of the injured, five were admitted to Munshiganj General Hospital while the rest given first aid.
