Rival factions hold separate programmes in districts

Intra-party feud in BNP in several districts became obvious yesterday as rival factions openly held separate programmes to mark death anniversary of the party's founder chairman late president Ziaur Rahman. Our Correspondent in Magura reports: The rival units of the district held separate discussion meetings, milad mahfils and destitute feeding programmes yesterday to mark Ziaur Rahman's death anniversary. District unit BNP's president Kabir Murad-led faction held its programme at its office premises at Shaheed Mintu Road in the town while the rebel group led by advocate Mokaddes Hossain held the same at the auditorium of Magura Press Club. Tension mounted in the town and police contingents were deployed at the meeting venues and important places of the town. However, no untoward incident took place. With Kabir Murad in the chair, the discussion meeting of Kabir Murad-led faction was addressed by district unit BNP's general secretary Ali Ahmed Biswas, vice-president of the same unit BNP advocate Ahmed Hossain, municipality unit BNP's president as well as the former municipality chairman Abdul Gafur, Sadar BNP's president Sayed Mokaddes Ali and its general secretary Mihir Kanti Biswas and district BNP's publicity secretary Mizanur Rahman Hannan. The rebel committee's discussion meeting was presided over by its president advocate Mokaddes Hossain. Vice-presidents of the committee advocate Moyenuddin, Akter Hossain, Nurul Hasan Boku and Munshi Ali Tarek and municipality unit's general secretary Khan Hasan Imam Suja amongst others addressed the discussion. Party insiders said, Magura district unit BNP has been dogged by internal feud from July last year over formation of committees at different levels. The party split into two factions from last year's July, they said. The rival factions held separate councils of the district unit BNP and formed two different committees in November last year. But Kabir Murad's committee was approved by the central committee, sources in the party said. According to our Staff Correspondent in Khulna, rival BNP units are holding separate programmes to observe the 29th death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman. One of the two factions of Khulna BNP is led by lawmaker elected from Khulna-2 constituency and president of Khulna city BNP Nazrul Islam Manju while the other faction is led by ex-lawmaker Ali Asgar Lobi and ex-Mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman. The Manju faction has taken three-day programmes which includes voluntary blood donation, mourning rally, milad mahfil and discussion meeting at Khulna Press Club auditorium. On the other hand, Lobi and Tayebur faction of the party took a day-long programme including hoisting of national and black flags, wearing of black badges, Quran Khwani, destitute feeding and discussion meeting on the roof of the multistoried building of Tayebur Rahman at Gaganbabu Road. Our Gaibandha Correspondent adds: Anisuzzaman Khan Babu group held a discussion meeting at BNP district office premises. It was presided by secretary of district BNP unit Gausul Azam Dollar. The meeting was addressed by Anisuzzaman Khan Babu, president, district BNP, former lawmaker Rustom Ali Mollah, Morshed Habib Sohel, Abdur Razzak Bhutto, Hasen Ali, Mamunur Rashid Mamun, Shamsul Islam and Momtazul Islam. The other group held its discussion programme at the public library hall. Presided by the unit's vice-president Alamgir Sadullah Dudu, it was addressed by Kamrul Hasan Salim, Abdur Razzak Sona, Rezaul Huq Chowdhury, advocate Jahangir Alam Jinnah, Tauhiduzzaman Shawpon and S M Kamal Hossain.
