RMCH Situation Takes a New Turn
Interns' leader, 35 others sued for beating attendant
A case was filed on Tuesday night against Intern Doctors' Council President Shah Alam Siddique Lalon and 35 other unnamed interns and outsiders on charge of beating up a patient's attendant at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on the night of May 23.
Khasru Ahmed, uncle of victim Raihan Rubel, lodged the case with Rajpara Police Station in the city. Rubel, 25, of the city's Mohisbathan area is now undergoing treatment at RMCH neuro-surgery ward no 8 with head injuries and bruises over different parts of his body.
The complainant, Khasru, in his case said Lalon along with other unidentified interns and outsiders severely beat up Rubel at around 11:30pm when he went to the hospital taking his grandfather Abdul Haque who was injured in a road accident.
He alleged that Lalon, the on-duty doctor at ward no 8, did not attend to 65-year-old Haque when he was taken there and rebuked Rubel for approaching the departmental head Dr Sheikh Ekram for attending to his patient.
Following a scuffle between Lalon and Rubel, Lalon called other interns and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League to the scene and beat up Rubel, the complainant said.
Khasru also accused Lalon and others of assaulting Rubel's mother Hasina Banu and father Abdur Rashid during the incident.
The next morning, the Interns at RMCH, went on an indefinite strike protesting assault on Lalon, one of their fellows, by a patient's attendant and demanding security of the interns.
They also demanded exemplary punishment to the person involved and investigation into the incident. The interns, however, called off the strike on Tuesday as the RMCH authorities assured them of fulfilling their demands.
Shah Alam Siddique Lalon, president of the ruling party-backed Interns council, claimed that he was assaulted by the attendant at ward No 8 of the hospital on the night of May 23.
When asked how Rubel was injured, Lalon replied, the attendants of other patients beat him up as he misbehaved with the interns at the ward.
RMCH ward master Mosharraf Hossain also filed a case against Rubel on the night of May 23, accusing him of assaulting Lalon.
