BCL men cut off Jubo League activist's hand
Cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Tuesday night cut off right hand of a Jubo League activist in Kathalbari area of Sadar upazila.
The victim was identified as Uzzal,21.
Police and locals said there was a longstanding rivalry between Chhatra League and Jubo League activists over establishing supremacy in the area.
On the fateful night, a group of BCL cadres, as a sequel to the previous enmity, 'tactfully' called Uzzal out of his house at around 11:00 pm and took him to a nearby school ground. There they beat him mercilessly and at one stage cut off his right hand up to the elbow.
Family sources said, the rivals also tried to cut off his other hand.
Hearing the screams of Uzzal, locals rushed to the spot but the culprits fled the scene.
Uzzal was immediately admitted to Kurigram Sadar Hospital but the doctors referred him to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital where he is now fighting for life.
Better treatment is urgently needed, otherwise his other hand cannot be saved, doctors at the hospital said.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar police station Taharul Islam said the victim and the offenders belonged to same party.
Uzzal had cut off ear of a rival cadre of Hemal group one year ago in Kanthalbari area, he said.
Now Hemal group might have cut his hand last night to take revenge, he said.
Uzzal was seen moving with the cadres of Hemal group in the evening in bazar area. At about 11:00 pm, Hemal group tactfully called him out of his house and took him to Kanthalbari Girls' High School ground and cut off his hand with sharp weapon, he added.
No case was lodged till filing of this report yesterday afternoon.
Police said they have launched a drive to arrest the culprits.
