4 killed, 134 injured as rival villagers clash in 4 districts

At least four people were killed and 134 others injured in clashes in Pabna, Narsingdi, Sumanganj and Brahmanbaria districts yesterday. In Pabna, two people were killed and 20 others injured in a clash between two groups at Paikasha village in Santhia upazila yesterday. The deceased were identified as Nizam, 55, and Hasiful, 25, reports our correspondent. Police said there was a longstanding rivalry between two Awami League leaders -- Abdur Rahman and Azizur. Their enmity climaxed yesterday over harvesting paddy from a disputed field. Supporters of both the leaders equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other over a trifling matter, leaving two killed and 20 injured from both sides. Police fired thrice to bring the situation under control, said Faruk Hossain, Officer-In-charge of Santhia police station. Of the injured, condition of Majan, 48, Jaidul, 45, Baten, 45, Jaynal, 27, Jalil, 35, Jamal, 42, Sayed, 30, Rakib, 28, and Hares, 25, was stated to be critical. In Narsingdi, one person was killed and 50 others were injured in a bloody clash between two groups of villagers yesterday reports a correspondent. The incident occurred in the morning at Darigaon village under Nilakkhya union, a remote char area under Raipura upazila. According to witnesses, Sabina, 25, daughter of Khalil Miah, of the village was tending paddy on the yard of their house. Abdul Haque, son of Daru Miah, of the same village crossed the yard riding a bicycle which damage some paddy. This angered Sabina and the two locked in an altercation. The elders of the villages arranged an arbitration to settle the matter but it turned into a clash leaving Rahis Miah, 50, killed and 50 others injured. Eleven seriously injured are Rafis Miah, 30, Imam Ali, 20, Khalil, 40, Ujjal, 28, Jasim, 50, Nasir, 35, Saidur, 14, Jahangir, 40, Rafique, 40, Kazi Miah, 32, and Noab Ali, 45. In Sunamganj, a baby girl was killed and four people were injured in a clash following an altercation between two children at Lakma village in Tahirpur upazila, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as two-month old Asia Begum, daughter of Abul Hossain of the village. Witnesses said the clash ensued following an altercation between two children over playing a game at 8pm, leaving five people injured. The injured were rushed to Upazila Health Complex where Asia died at 10pm. Police arrested suspected killer Ruhul but his accomplice Afzal managed to flee. Our correspondent in Brahmanbaria reports: At least 60 people were injured in a clash yesterday between two groups at Mona Bazar of Pharpur village under Bijoynagar upazila. According to locals and police, there was a longstanding enmity between two groups led by Ali Hossain and Abul Kalam centering bitter power struggle in the village. They locked in a two hour-long at Mona Bazar yesterday leaving 60 people from both sides injured. Of them, 31 were admitted to 250-bed Brahmanbaria Modern Hospital.
