A mobile court in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur arrested local Awami League (AL) leader Md Abdul Barek on charge of grabbing government khas land after ousting the lease holder. The mobile court led by Birganj upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Nurul Karim Buiyan arrested Md Abdul Barek, general secretary of AL ward committee of Shatagram UP, from Jharbari village of Birgnaj upazila on Tuesday afternoon, the official told this correspondent. On April 22, Barek and his brother Md Abdul Kader along with their hired man grabbed 0.5 decimal of government khas land and set up an eatery using political slogan and electoral symbol of AL after driving out Md Abdus Salam who had been running a tea stall on the land for 20 years upon a lease order. The Daily Star on May 7 published a report on its National Page in this regard. Meanwhile, local AL leaders of the upazila have started serious lobbying to get their party man released, police said. The arrestee was brought to Birganj police station but police allegedly showed him special favour by keeping him outside the lockup. "It is difficult to keep him inside the lockup as influential men of the ruling party are handling the matter," said a policeman of Birganj seeking anonymity. The process of bringing a charge against Barek for grabbing government land is also being delayed due to the lobbying, sources said.
