40 houses, 14 shops gutted in 3 districts

Fire gutted at least 40 houses shops and 14 shops in three districts on Tuesday and Monday. In Bandarban, a devastating fire gutted 40 houses in Jamchhari area of Sadar upazila early Tuesday. Fire service sources said the fire originated from the kitchen of a house late at night and soon engulfed the adjacent houses, reports UNB. On information, fire fighting unit from Sadar headquarters rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after an hour of hectic efforts with the help of local people. Fire service sources primarily estimated the losses caused from the fire at about Tk 50 lakh. Bir Bahadur MP, Chairman of CHT Development Board, Kashailya, Sadar upazila Chairman and DC Mizanur Rahman visited the spot and assured all possible help to the fire victims. In Gopalganj, a devastating fire that broke out at Rajpat bazaar in Kashiani upazila burnt down eight shops early Monday. Police and locals said the fire originating from an electric short circuit at a shop at about 3:00am engulfed seven other adjacent shops. Local people extinguished the blaze after two hours of frantic efforts with the help of police. Police said five people sustained burn injuries while putting out the blaze. Affected shop owners claimed that commodities worth over Tk 3 lakh were gutted by the fire. Six shops were gutted at Matlab (south) upazila in Chandpur on Tuesday damaging goods worth around Tk 15 lakh, according to a correspondent. Fire service official Farid Ahmed quoting locals said the six shops were burnt down before they could reach the spot at 4:15am. The shops caught fire at around 3:00am. Ahmed said they, however, managed to save 7-8 other shops worth Tk 15-20 lakh as they were able douse the fire with the help of locals. The fire might have been originated from an electric short-circuit in a small rice mill, he said.
