5 'suicide bids' in Meherpur

Three murders allegedly for dowry in 3 other dists

Five people allegedly attempted to commit suicide in 10 hours from 6:00am yesterday in Meherpur district. All are now undergoing treatment in Meherpur General Hospital. Babar Ali and Mina Biswas, a couple of Monkhali in Mujibnagar upazila in the district took poison following a family feud at about 6:00am. Neighbours said Mina often locked in quarrel with Babar over his alleged extra marital affair. They were rushed to Meherpur General Hospital at about 10.00am. Furu Begum, 30, wife of Dudhu Mia of Amdah village in Sadar upazila in the district attempted suicide allegedly as her husband often tortured her for dowry. Furu, mother of two, yesterday took poison at her house at about 9:00am. She was admitted to Meherpur General Hospital. Sawpan of Dhala village in Sadar upazila allegedly beat up his wife Susmita, 24, as she protested his extra marital affair with another girl on Monday night. Susmita took poison yesterday at about 12.00pm. Mostafa of the same village beat up his wife Rashida on Monday night as she refused to bring Tk 50,000 dowry from her parent's house. Rashida, 19, also took poison yesterday at about 2.00pm. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar police station said they were not aware about such incidents. Doctors at the hospital, however, said all the patients are now out of danger. Our correspondent in Brahmanbaria reports: Shahnara Begum, 25, a mother of one child, was murdered allegedly by her husband for dowry at Tarua village under Ashuganj upazila on Saturday night. According to locals and police, Shahnara's husband Habir Mia often tortured her for dowry. On Saturday night, Habir Mia again demanded dowry from his wife. As she refused, Habir started beating her mercilessly and at one stage suffocated her to death. In Pabna, police recovered the body a young woman from a ditch beside the Muladuli rail bazar under Iswardi upazila on Saturday, reports our correspondent. She was identified as Jobeda Khatun, 22, wife of Anwar Khan of village Muladuli in Ishwardi upazila. Jobeda was beaten up mercilessly allegedly by her husband and her in-laws for dowry, police and the victim's family sources said. The victim's family filed a case with Ishwardi police station accusing her husband and mother in-law on Saturday night. In Satkhira, a housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at Rajendrapur village in Tala upazila on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Shipra Ghosh, wife of Kartik Ghosh, reports UNB. On information, police on Friday morning recovered the body that bore several injury marks and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. Family sources said, Shipra was married off with Kartik in 2000. Shipra's parents gave him Tk 40,000 in cash and five tolas of gold ornaments as dowry. But after some days he started torturing her to bring Tk one lakh more from her parents as dowry. On the fateful night he picked up a quarrel with her as she refused to bring the money from her parents. At one stage, Kartik and his two sisters beat her mercilessly leaving her dead on the spot.
