Doctors, nurses and other staff of Pabna Mental Hospital formed a human chain in the town yesterday demanding arrest of the outsiders who assaulted social psychiatric officer of the hospital on May 9. They also submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner and the police superintendent demanding immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment to the culprits. Otherwise, they threatened to launch a tougher agitation programme. Hospital sources said Social Psychiatric Officer Md Mojahar Ali came under attack by the outsiders allegedly led by Faruk and Harun when he was going to his hospital campus residence at about 7:30pm. They attacked Mojahar over entering the hospital campus, sources added. Mojahar was taken to Pabna General Hospital but doctors refereed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated the same night. Demanding arrest of the persons responsible for assaulting Mojahar, doctors, nurses and other staff of hospital have been observing strike for two hours from 11:00am to 1:00pm since May 10. They also stopped admitting patients to the hospital. Their agitation causes immense sufferings to patients, especially those coming from distant places. Contacted, Director of Pabna Mental Hospital Dr Md Enayet Karim said he asked the doctors and officials concerned to ensure patients' admission to the hospital. Mojahar's wife filed a case with Pabna Sadar Police Station on May 11 accusing two, Faruk and Harun, but the accused are yet to be arrested. Addressing a rally at the venue of human chain at Abdul Hamid Road, Dr Nikhil Kumar said outsiders often misbehave, even assault doctors and staffs of the hospital on various pretexts. The criminals attacked Mojahar as he took steps to prevent entrance of the brokers and frauds to the hospital, he alleged Officer-in- Charge of Sadar Police Station Md Motiur Rahman told this correspondent that the accused had gone into hiding soon after incident. He further said the law enforcers are raiding different areas to nab the culprits.
