Businessman killed, night coaches looted by robbers

Robbers shot dead a businessman in Bandarban and looted two night coaches in Satkhira. Robbers murdered a businessman and took away Tk 7 lakh at Ringbhong on Lama-Chakoria border in Alikadam upazila of Bandarban yesterday. Liaqat Ali, owner of Liaqat Tobacco Limited, accompanied by his son Ahsan was going to Chakoria from his factory at Ali Kadam. A group of 5 to 6 armed robbers intercepted his jeep at about 2:00 pm. The gang shot him twice, snatched away the money and fled to the nearby forest. Fatally wounded Liaqat was rushed to Central Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police suspected that the robbers had prior information about Liaqat's traveling with the money through the road which usually remains lonely between Kumari and Ringvong. Our Correspondent in Satkhira reports: Robberies were committed in two Satkhira-bound night coaches coming from Dhaka near Jhhowdanga college in Sadar upazila on Satkhira-Dhaka highway at about 3:00 am yesterday. The robbers decamped with cash and valuables worth Tk 3 lakh, police said. Police later arrested five people for their alleged involvement in the robberies. The arrestees are Abdul Bari, 36, son of Asgar Ali Mollah of village Mohonpur; Shahin, 25, son of Sunnat Ali of village Waria; Ataur Rahman, 3, son of Monsur Ali of village Gobindakati; Sheikh Rasheduzzaman, 32 son of Abul Hossain of village Tujalpur and Mithun Kumar Ghosh, 35, son of Madhusudan Ghosh of village Jhhowdanga in Sadar upazila. Quoting locals police said an armed gang stopped the two Satkhira-bound night coaches of M R Paribahan and Satkhira Express by putting barricade on the road in front of Jhhowdanga College. The robbers then looted cash and other valuables from the passengers of the two coaches and managed to escape the scene.
