Import and export through Burimari land port under Patgram upazila came to a halt yesterday morning as the day labourers observed work stoppage demanding increased wage. About one thousand labourers working at the land port did not join their work. However, they withdrew their programme in the afternoon after a meeting with the Clearing and Forwarding Agents and land port officials They will join their work today as they were assured of increased wage soon. The day labourers said they are deprived of minimum wage from the clearing and forwarding agents. The C & F agents give Tk 70 for unloading one tonne goods from the truck, whereas the government fixed Tk 120 for it, said labourer Momin Mollah. Labourer Kashem Ali said, “We did not dare to protest this in fear of C & F agents. Now we are united and we shall establish our right by any means.” President of Clearing and Forwarding Agents Association Sayeduzzaman said, “The day labourers observed work stoppage illegally. They are always paid reasonable wage.” Ctg port Our Staff Correspondent in Chittagong reports: Cargo handling started at both Chittagong port jetties and outer anchorage since early hours yesterday as Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation withdrew indefinite inland water transport strike after seven days. With the resumption of work by transport workers full-swing cargo handling started at 17 vessels of twelve cargo jetties of the port since last midnight, said Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) secretary Syed Farhad Uddin Ahmed. Cargo handling took place at the outer anchorage and all the 60 lighter vessels started movement as per schedule. Forty-five vessels went to take delivery from the feeder vessels at outer anchorage while 15 loaded vessels left for their respective destinations, said Water Transport Coordination Cell (WTCC) Executive Director Commodore (retd) Abu Zaher Nizam yesterday afternoon.
