Trial of six others yet to start
A court has sentenced an Indian intruder to jail in Narayanganj while trial of six Indians held in Khagrachhari is yet to start three months into their arrest.
A Narayanganj court on Tuesday sentenced Indian citizen Dulal Das to one year rigorous imprisonment in absentia on charge of intruding into Bangladesh in 2006.
Convict Dulal is also a drug peddler and son of Birendro Das of Ratondul Boxnagar village of West Tripura in India, reports UNB.
According to the prosecution, Dulal Das had been living illegally at the house of Kuddus Master in Khanpur area of the district town since long.
Acting on a tip-off, SI Saiful Islam of Detective Branch of police raided Kuddus Master's house and arrested him along with banned phensidyl syrup on May 29, 2006. But later he secured bail from the court and went into hiding.
Police said after arrest he introduced himself as Zakir Hossain Dulal, son of Yusuf Ali of Damudya Burirhat area of Shariatpur district.
Two separate cases were filed against him.
Our Correspondent from Khagrachhari reports: Six Indian nationals including two women, arrested on February 23 are languishing in district jail for over three months without trial.
Neither Bangladesh government nor Indian authorities has taken any initiative in this regard. Even, the arrestees have not been allowed to appoint lawyers to face the charges, court sources said.
The four male arrestees hailing from Indian state of Asaam are N Din Tekira, 34, son of H Narjari of Guru Bashu village under Chirang district, Bibedor, 27, son of Monesh of Borgihora village under Dubri district, Bibijit Giri, 25, son of Ronjit from Panbari village under Golaghat distict, B. Thakari, 24, from Boglabari village under Golapara district. The two women accused are B. Bithrahi, 23, daughter of G. Bashumathari of Sangchali village under Nalbari district and B. Anchali, 21, daughter of Purna Bashumathari of Burimakha village under Golaghat district in Asaam.
Sub-Inspector Mohammad Aktaruzzaman Sarkar filed a case with Khagrachhari Sadar police station on February 24 under Section 4 of Control of Entry Act, 1952.
But in the first information report he mentioned them as the members of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB), a militant group of Asaam, that wants a separate state.
Investigation Officer Mohammad Shahjahan Ali however told this correspondent that he is likely to submit chargesheet on May 30.
