Frequent attack on a Sylhet mall worries traders

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
Leaders of the business community yesterday called upon the administration and law enforcers to take steps to stop attacks on a shopping mall by a section of activists and agitators. They raised the demand at a press conference held at the Sylhet Press Club yesterday afternoon. Al-Hamra Shopping City Bayboshayee Samity organised it while Sylhet Zila Bayboshayee Oikya O Kalyan Parishad leaders attended. President of the samity Abdus Salam said in his statement to the press that the shopping mall with over 400 shops, British Council's library and office, a bank, a private university, offices of several commercial firms, a restaurant and a residential hotel often come under attack. Several thousand employees are working in those business establishments, he added. While passing through the main road in front of the mall, the agitators pelt bricks and stones causing damage on the building. It has become a matter of serious concern for the businessmen here, he said. The businessmen said, even on filing cases and lodging general diaries, the law enforcers take no measures to stop such unwanted incident. Rather they compel us to put the shutters down. The latest incident took place on April 28 evening when some processionists pelted bricks on the building, the shop owners said. During the last one year at least 10 such incidents took place, they alleged.
