Indefinite transport strike 'enforced' in Moulvibazar
Indefinite transport strike began in Moulvibazar district yesterday.
All types of vehicles remained off the streets since morning causing untold sufferings to passengers.
Sylhet Division Transport Owners and Workers Unity Council, an organisation backed by a local AL leader, called for strike in all the four districts of Sylhet division. However, transport owners and workers of Habiganj, Sunamganj and Sylhet districts have not joined the strike, sources in those districts said.
Transport owners and workers in the district alleged that they were forced by the council to enforce the strike.
Sources in the unity council said they called the indefinite strike to press for withdrawal of extortion case against the leaders of the organisation and action against officer-in-charge (OC) of Moulvibazar Sadar police station for not arresting the accused in the case filed by the organisation.
Syed Mofassil Ali, convener of the unity council, who is also a powerful leader of Moulvibazar district AL, told this correspondent that all types of vehicles including CNG- run three-wheelers have spontaneously joined the strike called by his organisation. The strike will continue until their demands are realised, he added.
Contacted, Amulya Kumar Chowdhury, OC of Moulvibazar Sadar police station said a dispute was prevailing between the leaders of unity council and a leaseholder of a government land in Sherpur area under Sadar upazila on Sylhet-Dhaka highway.
Gias Uddin, the leaseholder, also a London expatriate, recently filed an extortion case against 31 people including Syed Mofassil Ali.
On the other hand, another extortion case was filed against 30 people including leaseholder Giasuddin on behalf of Syed Mofassil, the OC said.
