Jubo League, BCL leaders held for Pabna chaos
Two leaders of ruling Awami League's associate bodies--Jubo League and Chhatra League--were arrested on Monday on charges of vandalising shops and vehicles in the town on Sunday night.
The arrestees are Moshtaq Ahmed Azad, former secretary of BCL Pabna district unit, and Khokon, secretary of Jubo Leage Pabna municipal unit.
The incident occurred at around 9:00pm on Sunday when a BCL group took out a procession in the town, rejecting new district committee that formed through selection.
Following the incident, Mahedi Hassan, organising secretary of Pabna municipal unit, filed a case with Sadar Police Station against 12 people, including district Jubo League President Ragib Hassan Tipu and BCL leader Moshtaq Ahmed Azad.
Officer- in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Md Motiur Rahman told this correspondent that they arrested the two in a case filed by AL leader Mehdi Hassan.
Meanwhile, at least 25 people, including 13 policemen, were injured during a clash between two BCL factions on Pabna Edward College campus on Monday.
Campus sources said the trouble began at around 2:00pm when the BCL faction, which rejected formation of the new district body the day before, came under attack by their rival party men.
Both sides chased each other and hurled brickbats, leaving at least 25, including 13 cops injured. Police charged batons and brought the situation under control.
Three of the injured policemen--Sub- Inspector (SI) Md Shahid, ASI Bijoy and constable Abdul Khaleque--were admitted to Pabna General Hospital while the rest were given first aid.
