Growers demand action against cold storage, compensation

Our Correspondent, Rangpur
Farmers of Rangpur and Nilphamari districts held a demonstration in front of the office of deputy commissioner (DC) yesterday demanding compensation for potatoes damaged at Moulana Bashir Uddin Cold Storage. They submitted a memorandum to the DC requesting him to form a committee to probe the matter, make a list of the affected farmers and hoarders and realise the compensation for them from the owners of the cold storage. The farmers also urged the authorities to take action against the cold storage management for not arranging alternative sources for power supply during load shedding. Most of the 60,000 bags of potatoes were damaged at the end of April as the power generator of the cold storage went out of order during load shedding. The affected farmers threatened to block all roads on May 10 if their demands are not met by this week. Nazrul Islam Hokkani, a farmer of Pirgachha area alleged that the cold storage owner stored about 60,000 bags of potatoes against the capacity of 40,000. Alamgir Choudhury, a farmer of Mahiganj area demanded punishment to the cold storage owner for his senseless act.
