Boro crops flooded in Pabna as dike collapses

Boro paddy over 1,000 hectares of land have gone under water due to collapse of an embankment of the Gumani River in Vangura upazila of the district on Wednesday. Locals said the embankment collapsed at Puibil point as water level in the river marked a sharp rise in the last two days. Upazila administration and locals threw about 1,000 sandbags on the breached portion of the embankment until 11:00pm on Wednesday to reduce the extent of damage. The worst affected areas are Dilpashra, Khanmorich and Ashtomonisha unions. Water Development Board (WDB) said it has no fund to repair the dyke as it is an abandoned project. Local officials of the Agriculture Extension department said if water level in the Gumani River continues to rise, boro on 500 more hectares of land in Khanmorich, Dilpashra, Aushtomonisha and Char Vangura unions will also go under water. Nirbahi Officer Ananda Kumar Biswas said Vangura upazila administration with the help of the local people and the workers from different projects are trying to repair the embankment temporarily. “We threw 2,000 sandbags on the breached portion until 4:00pm yesterday to reduce pressure of water. But this is temporary work," The UNO said.
