4 Indians jailed for gun-running
A court here yesterday jailed four Indian nationals in an arms case.
Convicts Robin, 35, Mill, 28, Over,25, and Star, 24, all hailing from Shillong, Meghalaya, to suffer 17 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) each, court sources said.
According to the prosecution, the BDR members led by Havilder Abdul Matin of Dona border camp while patrolling Karaballa point in Kanaighat upazila arrested the Indians along with firearms and ammunition on July 15, 2005. The Indians had intruded into Bangladesh territory through Natanpur borders in Assam.
The border guards recovered one AK 56 rifle, 3 grenades of 102 model, two 9 mm pistols, 316 bullets of AK 56 rifle, 328 bullets of 9 mm pistol, 4 magazines of AK 56 rifle, 3 magazines of 9 mm pistol, 3000 Indian rupees and 2700 Bangladeshi taka from their possession.
Nayek Subedar Md Amir Khasru of 21 Rifle Battalion of Sylhet filed a case in this connection the same day with Kanaighat police.
On investigation, police filed charge sheet on August 14 the same year against the accused.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge of Sylhet-I took testimony of 20 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
Judge Md Jalal Uddin yesterday pronounced the verdict while asking the authorities for pushing back the convict Indians on completion of their jail term.
